Immuuntherapie wordt steeds meer toegepast bij de behandeling van hematologische maligniteiten en solide tumoren en ook bij de behandeling van auto-immuunziekten. Immuuntherapie met monoklonale antistoffen is erop gericht het immuunsysteem te versterken of juist af te remmen. Beide aspecten van immuuntherapie werden besproken tijdens het eerste symposium van het College van Medisch Immunologen op 12 juni 2019. Gedurende het symposium stonden monoklonale antistoffen tegen B-cellen (rituximab, gericht tegen het CD20-antigeen), plasmacellen (daratumumab, gericht tegen het CD38-antigeen) en T-cellen (met name pembrolizumab en ipilimumab, gericht tegen respectievelijk PD-1 en CTLA4) model voor successen en uitdagingen van immuuntherapie met monoklonlae antistoffen. Daarnaast werd stilgestaan bij nieuwe aspecten van de ontwikkeling van therapeutische antistoffen vanuit de industrie.
