Op 11 februari 2015 promoveerde Erica van der Wiel aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen op het proefschrift getiteld: The clinical expression of large and small airway dysfunction in asthma. Zij verrichte haar promotieonderzoek binnen het Groningen Research Institute for asthma and COPD (GRIAC) in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, begeleid door prof. dr. D.S. Postma, dr. N.H.T. ten Hacken en dr. M. van den Berge. Erica van der Wiel is in opleiding tot longarts in het UMCG en verricht nu haar vooropleiding in het Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden.
